President Trump on Tuesday criticized Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar, claiming she “does nothing but complain” and suggesting she should be removed from the United States over allegations of immigration fraud.
Speaking at the first stop of his affordability-focused roadshow in northeastern Pennsylvania, Trump referenced Omar’s hijab, saying, “I love this Ilhan Omar, whatever the hell her name is, with the little turban. I love her. She comes in, does nothing but b—h. She’s always complaining.”
The president repeated long-debunked claims that Omar illegally married her brother to obtain U.S. citizenship. “We oughta get her the hell out. She married her brother in order to get in, right? She married her brother… Therefore, she’s here illegally. She should get the hell out,” Trump said. His comments drew chants of “Send her back!” from the crowd.
Omar has consistently denied these claims. The allegation first appeared on conservative blogs in 2016, when she was running for the Minnesota state legislature. At the time, she called the rumors “baseless” and “absolutely false and ridiculous.” Omar married Ahmed Nur Said Elmi in 2009, divorcing in 2011, and later married Ahmed Hirsi, divorcing in 2019.
Trump’s remarks come amid increased attention on Minnesota’s $1 billion fraud scandal, which has primarily affected the state’s Somali immigrant community. Last week, ICE conducted a major operation, apprehending more than a dozen individuals residing in the U.S. illegally. The Minneapolis-St. Paul area is home to the largest Somali population in the country.
