In an extraordinary case Italian authorities are calling a “Mrs. Doubtfire scandal,” a 56-year-old man allegedly impersonated his deceased mother to collect thousands of euros in pension payments each year.
According to Corriere della Sera, the man’s mother, Graziella Dall’Oglio, died three years ago at the age of 82. Instead of reporting her death, he concealed her mummified body in a sleeping bag in the family home’s laundry room.
Over the years, the son reportedly perfected the impersonation, mimicking his mother’s appearance, makeup, and mannerisms, and even successfully renewed her identity card at a local government office in Mantua. Combined with the income from her pension and a portfolio of three properties, the man is said to have pocketed roughly $61,000 annually.
Authorities described the elaborate charade as a “Mrs. Doubtfire-style transformation,” referencing the 1993 film in which Robin Williams disguises himself as a housekeeper to remain close to his children.
The ruse was finally uncovered by a vigilant government employee who noticed masculine features in the man, including a low voice and a “thick” neck. Officials compared photos of mother and son, realizing the deception.
When authorities searched the home, they discovered Dall’Oglio’s body. Officials do not suspect foul play in her death. “She probably died of natural causes but that will be established by the postmortem. It is a very strange story and very, very sad,” said Francesco Aporti, mayor of Borgo Virgilio.
The son is now under investigation for concealing a body and benefit fraud. It is unclear whether he has been arrested.
