Just not extreme violent illegal alien felons.

Democrats once claimed their sanctuary policies were aimed at protecting undocumented immigrants, not violent criminals—though they occasionally excused minor offenses like unlicensed driving under the influence.

Now, the Zohran Mamdani administration in New York City is taking sanctuary politics a step further, declaring the city a refuge for violent undocumented felons.

Elle Bisgaard-Church, Chief of Staff for Mayor Mamdani, stated that the mayor “made clear that we uphold sanctuary laws in our city and all immigrants will be safe here.” She added that city cooperation with ICE would occur only in “extreme violent felony cases.”

What qualifies as an “extreme violent felony”? According to critics, the threshold seems elastic—moderate crimes such as assault, mugging, rape, or even murder may not automatically trigger cooperation with federal authorities. Under Mamdani’s policies, only the most extreme acts—like killing multiple people within a very short time frame—might be reportable to ICE.

The definition of “moderate” versus “extreme” has become a point of contention. With Mamdani previously characterizing groups like Hamas as moderate, some opponents fear the city’s standards could allow a wide range of serious offenses to go unpunished federally.

While supporters argue the policies reflect a humane approach, critics warn it could set the stage for future city administrations to extend sanctuary protections to increasingly violent offenders.
