Police in Irvine, California, are searching for a suspected package thief whose resemblance to Backstreet Boys singer AJ McLean has sparked plenty of online chatter, according to KTLA. Investigators say the man slipped into a secured mailroom at an apartment complex after trailing an Amazon delivery driver, then walked out with packages that didn’t belong to him.
“We’re confident this isn’t AJ McLean,” the Irvine Police Department joked in a Facebook post, “but the likeness definitely made us look twice.” Playing off the boy band’s hits, the department added: “Quit playin’ games with our mail. Backstreet’s back, but your packages shouldn’t be going with him.”
Police released surveillance footage of the theft, humorously set to the group’s 1997 track “Everybody.” According to the Independent, social media users quickly chimed in—not all convinced of the Backstreet Boys comparison. Some suggested the man more closely resembles NSYNC’s Joey Fatone, while one commenter remarked: “If they think he looks like AJ, I struggle to believe they can positively ID any criminal.”
