New York City police are searching for a suspect after New York Jets cornerback Kris Boyd was shot early Sunday morning.
Boyd, 29, is in critical but stable condition, WABC-TV reported Monday.
Authorities released video footage of the suspect involved in the shooting, which occurred shortly after 2 a.m., according to the New York Post. The Jets were not scheduled to play on Sunday, having lost to the New England Patriots on Thursday.
“We are aware of the situation involving Kris Boyd and will have no further comment at this time,” a Jets representative said, per the newspaper.
Police said Boyd was shot in the abdomen outside a restaurant following a dispute that escalated into violence. Two shots were fired, and it is unclear whether Boyd was the intended target. Witnesses reported that two luxury vehicles — a BMW X6 and a Mercedes-Maybach — fled the scene.
According to the New York Post, Boyd told police he had briefly entered Sei Less restaurant before the incident. He described a tense atmosphere inside the establishment, which is known to attract celebrities.
Boyd signed a $1.6 million contract with the Jets this year but has not played due to a preseason shoulder injury, WABC noted.
Previously, Boyd played for the Minnesota Vikings, Arizona Cardinals, and Houston Texans. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
