KENNER, Louisiana — A dramatic police standoff in suburban New Orleans ended with the arrest of a Honduran national wanted for murder in his home country, thanks to the use of advanced police robotics.
Elviss Caballero-Zuniga, 53, was taken into custody Friday, August 22, after an hours-long confrontation with law enforcement in Kenner, according to U.S. Border Patrol officials.
Caballero-Zuniga, who was wanted on a murder charge in Honduras, surrendered after police deployed a SWAT robot and drone team to breach his residence. The Kenner Police Department said officers used the armored vehicle’s “boom” to open the front door before sending in the robot, which ultimately helped secure his surrender.
Photos released by Border Patrol show agents escorting the suspect to a patrol car following his capture. “Due to new technology, training, and equipment, this mission was a complete success,” the Kenner Police Department said in a statement. “Our federal partners now have this assassin in custody.”
Authorities have not yet released details about the alleged murder in Honduras or the identity of the victim. U.S. Border Patrol confirmed on August 27 that Caballero-Zuniga remains in custody and faces an additional felony charge for illegal re-entry into the United States.
It was not immediately clear whether the suspect had obtained legal representation.
