Hillsborough County deputies have released bodycam footage showing a daring rescue of a 7-year-old boy who was threatened with a knife by a suspect in Brandon, Florida.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) said deputies responded to a domestic violence call shortly after 2 p.m. on Sunday. The caller reported that 27-year-old Mario Camacho had a knife to the child’s throat and was choking him.

Upon arrival, deputies found Camacho barricaded in a back bedroom with the child. Bodycam footage shows a male and female deputy announcing their presence and repeatedly instructing the suspect to release the boy. The child’s screams can be heard in the video.

When Camacho refused to comply, deputies forced their way into the room. Officers ordered him to show his hands, warning that he would be shot if he did not release the child. After the suspect continued to resist, one deputy fired a shot, incapacitating Camacho. The child was immediately taken to safety.

Camacho was transported to Brandon Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased at 2:47 p.m.

The heroic officer who took decisive action was identified as 25-year-old Antonio Gonzalez, who has served nearly six years with HCSO, including five as a Detention Deputy and 11 months as a Law Enforcement Deputy. Gonzalez has been placed on administrative leave with pay pending the outcome of the investigation.
