New sleeveless versions of the sacred undergarments worn by members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints sold out within hours of their release in the United States, marking a milestone for many women in the faith who say they can now experience both comfort and devotion without compromise.

Social media lit up Tuesday with photos of long lines—mostly women—eager to enter church clothing stores to try on the newly designed garments. According to the Associated Press, enthusiasm for the update extends beyond fashion freedom. The garments, typically worn beneath modest clothing, now feature lighter, more breathable fabrics that many hope will make them more comfortable in warm climates or for those with medical sensitivities.

While often misunderstood or mocked by outsiders, these temple garments—worn by both men and women—are sacred vestments meant to remind Latter-day Saints of covenants of obedience, sacrifice, chastity, and consecration. Kathleen Flake, a former professor of Mormon studies at the University of Virginia, explains that the changes reflect the church’s commitment to helping members live their faith comfortably and faithfully.

The new garments, priced at about $4 to $5 each, were created by a design team that included both men and women within the church. They worked closely with leading lingerie manufacturers over the past two years to refine materials and styles. “They’ve tried to make underwear for the world, essentially,” Flake said. “The goal is to ensure members can be comfortable while fulfilling this aspect of their religion.”

Flake noted that the church has periodically updated temple garments throughout its history to reflect evolving cultural norms and global needs. This latest redesign was first rolled out internationally—in regions with hotter climates and where local dress styles made sleeveless designs more practical—before arriving in the U.S.

Men have also welcomed the change. Daniel Walker, preparing to leave for missionary training, said he was eager to purchase the sleeveless style before departing for his mission in California. He said a friend who served in Africa had already been able to wear them there and encouraged him to buy a set as soon as they became available in the States.
