Alarming Signs of Accelerating Islamization in the West
Across both Britain and the United States, evidence is growing that the spread of Islamist ideology—once thought to be a distant European problem—is gaining momentum within Western institutions and politics.
For years, Americans viewed the erosion of Western values through Islamist influence as an issue largely confined to Europe. That perception has now changed.
In New York, Democratic Socialist Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani, widely expected to become the city’s next mayor, recently posted photos of himself visiting Masjid At-Taqwa in Brooklyn alongside Imam Siraj Wahhaj, whom he praised as one of America’s leading Muslim voices.
Masjid At-Taqwa has long been associated with radical figures involved in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. Imam Wahhaj was identified as an unindicted co-conspirator in that case and even testified on behalf of Omar Abdel-Rahman, the “blind sheikh” who led the terrorist conspiracy.
Wahhaj has repeatedly defended selective violence in pursuit of Islamic goals, stating: “Politics are a weapon to use in the cause of Islam… You came to America for one reason—to establish Allah’s deen.” He has also predicted that “Democracy will crumble, and the only thing that will remain will be Islam.”
Mamdani’s public embrace of Wahhaj is seen by many as an attempt to normalize Islamist extremism within American political life—without fear of challenge.
Mamdani, a Shia Muslim of the Twelver sect, adheres to a branch of Islam that anticipates the return of the “Twelfth Imam” in an apocalyptic event. The world’s most powerful Twelver leaders include Iran’s Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and his predecessor Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, both of whom have espoused hostility toward Israel and the West.
Both Shia and Sunni extremists share an ideological commitment to the eradication of Israel and the subjugation of Western civilization under Islamic rule.
Mamdani himself has declared his faith “very important” to him—raising questions about how that aligns with his progressive LGBTQ+ platform.
President Donald Trump has warned that New York City is on the verge of electing a communist mayor. Yet, the greater concern, he has noted, is that the same Islamist threat Israel faces abroad is now taking root in America itself.
Islamism Gaining Ground in Britain
Across the Atlantic, Britain is facing its own surge in Islamist influence.
This week, fans of Israel’s Maccabi Tel Aviv football club were banned from attending next month’s match against Aston Villa in Birmingham after a petition led by MPs Ayoub Khan and Jeremy Corbyn accused Israel of “genocide” in Gaza. The petition labeled Maccabi fans “hooligans,” citing last year’s violent clash in Amsterdam.
However, Dutch authorities confirmed that the violence there was a pre-planned antisemitic assault, during which Jewish fans were hunted through the streets and even driven into canals.
The Birmingham ban effectively punished Jewish supporters for being victims of antisemitic violence—prompting backlash from across Britain’s political spectrum.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer, though strongly pro-Palestine, called the ban “antisemitic” and vowed to overturn it. Lisa Nandy, a senior government minister, denounced MP Iqbal Mohamed for spreading antisemitic stereotypes about Jewish fans.
This condemnation was notable given that Britain’s government has long been reluctant to confront Muslim antisemitism, preferring to sanitize or ignore Islamist hostility. Many observers argue that the “Palestine cause” itself has become a vehicle for Islamist radicalization in the West.
The Palestinian flag, once a symbol of solidarity, now often accompanies chants for the destruction of Israel and the downfall of Western democracy. The October 7 Hamas attacks on Israel emboldened Islamist and far-left activists who see global jihad as a revolutionary cause.
Warning Signs in America
In the U.S., similar trends are emerging.
In Dearborn, Michigan, mosques have broadcast outdoor calls to prayer in violation of city laws, while Mayor Abdullah H. Hammoud reportedly told a Christian resident concerned about pro-Hamas street names that he was “not welcome” in the city.
In Texas, the East Plano Islamic Center has purchased extensive land to develop a self-governing Sharia-compliant enclave. Its leadership has declared: “We are, Inshallah, going to change the entire dawah scene by demonstrating to the world what it means to be a Muslim living in the West.”
At the American Muslims for Palestine conference in Illinois earlier this year, thousands of attendees openly discussed strategies to “bring America to its knees” through mass mobilization and disruption.
A Western Crisis of Will
Despite scattered political pushback, both Britain and America have largely failed to confront the ideological roots of Islamism. Western leaders routinely insist they will not tolerate antisemitism—yet “pro-Palestine” demonstrations filled with antisemitic chants continue with impunity.
Analysts warn that Western tolerance of Islamist extremism is pushing societies toward a dangerous breaking point. To preserve democratic values, they argue, governments must take decisive action—by banning the Muslim Brotherhood, deporting radical clerics, abolishing Sharia-based parallel systems, and rejecting the use of “Islamophobia” as a shield for extremism.
Both nations stand at a crossroads. Without the will to defend their core principles—democracy, free speech, and the rule of one law for all—the West risks cultural disintegration from within.
As the warning signs multiply, the question is no longer whether Islamization is advancing, but whether Western civilization still has the resolve to stop it.
