The Los Angeles Dodgers will be without relief pitcher Alex Vesia as they prepare for the World Series, with the left-hander taking leave to address what the team described as a “deeply personal family matter.”

The Dodgers announced Vesia’s absence Thursday on social media, expressing full support for him and his family. “The entire Dodgers organization is sending our thoughts to the Vesia family, and we will provide an update at a later date,” the statement read.

While details remain private, Vesia’s wife, Kayla, is expecting their first child—a journey she has shared with fans online. Her recent Instagram post jokingly marked each day of the week with “maybe have a baby,” suggesting her due date could be near. Though there’s been no confirmation connecting Vesia’s leave to the pregnancy, TMZ noted she appears “ready to give birth any day.” The couple announced the pregnancy in April, according to Sports Illustrated.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters the team is reviewing options to fill Vesia’s roster spot. “We’re going through the process of trying to backfill his spot on the roster,” Roberts said Thursday. “We’re still reviewing rules and options.”

Vesia, 29, has been a key contributor to the Dodgers’ playoff run, stringing together six consecutive scoreless outings this postseason. He’s recorded a 3.86 ERA over 4.2 innings in October play.

It remains unclear whether Vesia will rejoin the team should his situation allow. Game 1 of the World Series is scheduled for Friday in Toronto.
