Shield AI Unveils Fully Autonomous Fighter Jet Powered by Combat-Proven AI

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. defense technology company Shield AI has unveiled the X-BAT, a next-generation, fully autonomous multirole fighter jet powered by its advanced artificial intelligence system known as Hivemind — the same AI that once flew an F-16 in a real-world dogfight.

The company says the X-BAT is capable of taking off vertically without a runway and can operate from remote islands, container ships, and other unconventional locations. This flexibility, Shield AI says, allows commanders to deploy advanced airpower “from almost anywhere.”

said Armor Harris, Shield AI’s senior vice president of aircraft engineering.

The X-BAT’s unveiling marks a major leap in the U.S. military’s pursuit of autonomous systems designed to operate independently in highly contested environments where human pilots might not survive.

AI That Fought an F-16

In a groundbreaking 2024 test, an AI-driven F-16 — the X-62A Variable In-flight Simulation Test Aircraft (VISTA) — went head-to-head with a crewed fighter in aerial combat. While the military never disclosed which jet won, the test was described as a “transformational moment” for autonomous warfare by then–Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall, who rode in the back seat of the pilotless aircraft during the test.

Powered by Hivemind, the new X-BAT can perform missions without GPS or communications, making it resilient in electronic warfare environments. Shield AI says that unlike legacy aircraft, X-BAT isn’t limited by human safety constraints — allowing for greater agility, endurance, and combat flexibility.

the company said, adding that such systems are “reshaping how future conflicts are fought and sustained.”

A “Drone Wingman” for Crewed Fighters

The U.S. Air Force is investing heavily in Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) — drone systems designed to operate alongside human pilots. Companies like General Atomics and Anduril Industries are developing the first prototypes under this initiative. Shield AI’s X-BAT, however, is built for the next stage — “what comes after,” as Harris put it.

He said X-BAT incorporates advanced electronic warfare systems, greater payload capacity, and extended range — capabilities designed to give commanders distributed long-range strike power and flexible combat options.

The aircraft’s affordability is another selling point. Shield AI says X-BAT offers “high-end capability for a fraction of the cost of traditional fighter jets,” making it suitable for large-scale production and reducing the risk of catastrophic losses in high-intensity warfare.

Designed for Global Deployment

With a 2,000-nautical-mile range and vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) capabilities, X-BAT can be launched from amphibious warships, small islands, or even commercial vessels. Harris said large-deck amphibious ships could host up to 60 X-BATs, while container ships could serve as mobile launch platforms in emergencies.

This flexibility could prove critical in the Indo-Pacific, where vast distances and potential conflict with China make traditional air operations more difficult. Shield AI described the X-BAT as the “only platform in its class” combining long range, autonomy, and runway-free deployment.

The aircraft can be used across multiple branches of the U.S. military — including the Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Army, and allied forces — providing a unified autonomous platform for future combat operations.

“The AI Race Will Determine the Next Battlefield Winner”

Kendall previously stated that “the AI competition is essentially going to determine who wins on the next battlefield.” The success of Shield AI’s Hivemind, first demonstrated in live dogfights, underscores how rapidly autonomous air combat technology is advancing.

Shield AI says the X-BAT was developed “to ensure the United States and its allies maintain an edge on the battlefield amid rapid technological change.”

The X-BAT was officially unveiled in Washington, D.C., before military leaders and lawmakers — signaling the growing importance of AI-powered air dominance as President Donald Trump’s administration continues prioritizing defense innovation and American technological superiority.
