Broadview, Illinois — Police Chief Thomas Mills has criticized Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for allegedly straining local resources through false 911 calls. Mills described an incident in which officers responded to a report of tampering at the ICE detention facility, only to discover a CBS News photographer filming outside. The facility has reportedly seen federal agents using projectiles and targeting journalists.

“It’s disturbing. It’s ridiculous,” Mills said. “Officers at the scene also questioned the validity of the 911 call claiming someone was tampering with a fence.”

CBS reporter Asal Rezaei reported that a masked ICE agent fired a pepper ball at her vehicle. Mills said he has demanded the officers’ identities and indicated that legal action may follow.

“We’re going to look at maybe reaching out to the Cook County State’s Attorney for subpoenas,” Mills stated.

Mills added that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has agreed to cooperate with the ongoing investigations, though specifics remain unclear. Local Democratic officials have long opposed the ICE facility in Broadview.

According to Mills, actions such as filing false reports could be classified under disorderly conduct, which he said is a violation of law.

Meanwhile, U.S. District Court Judge Jeffrey Cummings, nominated by President Joe Biden, has ordered ICE to limit certain arrest tactics after finding repeated violations of a 2022 agreement restricting warrantless arrests without probable cause. The compliance requirements have been extended through 2026.
