A Tennessee mother has captured hearts across the nation — and set a hospital record — after welcoming one of the biggest babies ever born at Nashville’s TriStar Centennial Women’s Hospital.
Shelby Martin went viral after giving birth to her son, Cassian, who weighed an astonishing 12 pounds, 14 ounces (5.8 kg) when he arrived via C-section. The hospital confirmed it was their largest birth in more than three years.
“When people talk about having a big baby — I don’t know ball. But trust me… I know ball,” Martin joked in a TikTok video posted October 1. Her post, featuring clips before and after Cassian’s arrival, has been viewed millions of times and liked more than 4.4 million times.
Viewers were amazed — and amused — by the newborn’s size. One user wrote, “HOW MANY YEARS WAS HE IN THERE?” Another teased, “Did the baby have to come out of the sunroof?”
TriStar Centennial Women’s Hospital celebrated the moment, calling it “a beautiful reminder of resilience and love.”
Cassian spent a short time in the NICU receiving oxygen and IV support while his glucose levels were monitored. Martin expressed her gratitude online, saying, “I want to thank the ladies who cared for me during my C-section recovery and the NICU team who loved on our big guy when I couldn’t. I’ll never forget you.”
As if the day weren’t special enough, Cassian arrived on Shelby’s birthday, which she called “the greatest gift I could ever receive.”
The internet’s fascination with big babies doesn’t stop there. In Florida, Daniella Hines delivered a 13-pound, 15-ounce son, Annan, in September. And in Alabama, Pamela Mann, a delivery driver, welcomed a 13-pound, 4-ounce daughter named Paris Halo earlier this year.
For perspective, the average newborn weighs around 7 pounds, according to Stanford Children’s Health — making these record-setting babies nearly twice that size.
