Adams had been polling in fourth place, trailing far behind frontrunner Mamdani, former Governor Andrew Cuomo, and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa. His withdrawal followed weeks of speculation over whether he would remain in the race.

“It’s been an honor to be your mayor,” Adams said in a video message from Gracie Mansion. “I am proud to say that we took that victory four years ago and turned it into action — making this city better for those who had been failed by government.”

The mayor highlighted his administration’s achievements, including reducing crime, increasing housing, and navigating the migrant crisis. Still, he acknowledged that despite these efforts, his campaign could not continue. “I strongly encourage whoever takes over City Hall to continue what we’ve done,” Adams said.

Adams did not endorse another candidate but issued a pointed warning about the dangers of radical politics in city government — a clear reference to Mamdani.

According to a draft of his remarks, Adams also criticized Cuomo, saying voters should not trust a politician who frequently changes positions, though that section was omitted from his final speech.

“This is the end of my campaign, but not the end of my public service,” Adams said. “I will keep fighting for this city, because I am a New Yorker — and fighting for our city is just what I do.”
