A man was shot and killed by a federal immigration officer and the agent was seriously injured during an attempted arrest in Franklin Park, a suburb of Chicago, on Friday, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Officials say the incident occurred when agents tried to take the man into custody, and he attempted to flee by driving his car into them. The agent was reportedly dragged by the vehicle and, “fearing for his life,” fired his weapon, striking the man, ICE said in a statement cited by CBS News.
The agent sustained severe injuries and is currently hospitalized in stable condition.
ICE described the incident as part of a “targeted law enforcement activity” near O’Hare International Airport. Following the shooting, local schools were placed on lockdown, according to NBC affiliate WMAQ.
The operation is part of a broader enforcement effort announced by ICE earlier in the week, aimed at apprehending undocumented immigrants with criminal records—a crackdown previously promised by former President Donald Trump.
