In the aftermath of the fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University on Wednesday, political figures from both parties responded to growing concerns about heated political discourse in the United States.

Kirk, 31, the founder of the conservative organization Turning Point USA, was shot in the neck while speaking at a campus event. The suspect remains at large as of Wednesday evening. Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident, which has raised questions about politically motivated violence.

Following the incident, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) appeared on CNN’s OutFront with Erin Burnett. When asked about Republican calls for Democrats to “lower the temperature,” Warren responded by pointing to former President Donald Trump’s rhetoric.

“Oh, please. Right. Why don’t you start with the president of the United States? Right? And every ugly [thing] he has posted and every ugly word,” Warren said. Her comments came just hours after the shooting.

Burnett then turned to Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ), whose wife, former Rep. Gabby Giffords, survived an assassination attempt in 2011. Kelly emphasized the need for broader accountability across the political spectrum.

“I would say everybody needs to lower the temperature,” Kelly said. “I’ve heard things said by my Democratic colleagues that are not helpful. I’ve heard things said by my Republican colleagues. And I think it’s important for people to understand, especially when they are in leadership positions, that your words have consequences.”

The incident has reignited debates over political rhetoric, personal responsibility, and the role of public figures in shaping national discourse.
