Charlie Kirk, a prominent conservative activist and close ally of U.S. President Donald Trump, was assassinated on Wednesday in a sniper attack that has stunned the nation. The 31-year-old was fatally shot by a gunman who fled the scene after reportedly jumping from a rooftop.
Authorities have launched a wide-scale investigation. According to FBI Special Agent Robert Bohls, the suspected murder weapon—a “high-powered” rifle—was recovered in a wooded area where the shooter is believed to have escaped. The rifle has been sent to the FBI lab for forensic analysis.
Utah Department of Public Safety Commissioner Beau Mason stated that the suspect appears to be of college age and confirmed that law enforcement has obtained images of the individual. “We are confident in our abilities to track that individual,” Mason said.
Mason also shared that he had spoken with Kirk’s wife, Erika, on the night of the shooting. “The family is devastated,” he said. “I can only imagine what they’re going through.”
Reflecting on the tragedy, Mason added: “This is not Utah. This is not what we are known for.”
