PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (WFLA) — A Port Charlotte man is facing felony charges after deputies say he attacked a couple with bug spray outside a Publix grocery store when they refused to let him cut in line.

The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office responded to the store around 2 p.m. on Sunday following reports of a physical altercation in the parking lot.

According to investigators, 65-year-old Daniel Kenel became agitated inside the store when he attempted to cut in front of a woman who was waiting in line for her husband. When the woman informed Kenel she was already in line, he became upset.

As the couple began placing their items on the checkout belt, Kenel continued trying to insert himself into the line, which escalated the situation. The woman’s husband stepped between her and Kenel, asking him to back off. Kenel then abandoned his cart and left the store.

Deputies say Kenel moved his vehicle to a different part of the parking lot and waited for the couple to exit. As they were loading groceries into their car, Kenel allegedly ran up behind them and sprayed both in the face with bug spray before fleeing the scene.

“This is a disgusting and cowardly act, and over what? Who checks out first at the grocery store?” said Sheriff Bill Prummell in a statement. “The level that this man took it to was dangerous and completely unnecessary. Please—when frustrations inevitably occur in life, take a moment to ask yourself, ‘Is this worth it?’ More often than not, the answer is no.”

The male victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Deputies later located Kenel nearby. He was identified by the victims but declined to speak with law enforcement. He was arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated battery causing great bodily harm.
