What began as a routine morning jog turned into a terrifying ordeal for a Kenai, Alaska woman last week. Ariean Fabrizio Colton, 36, was attacked by a bear just outside her home, dragged nearly 100 feet down a neighborhood road before a neighbor found her critically injured, according to CBS News.
Colton had “simply stepped outside for a jog,” her family said in a statement to Anchorage’s KTUU. Alaska Wildlife Trooper David Lorring confirmed to USA Today that the attack occurred just 50 yards from her driveway.
Described by loved ones as a “loving wife, mother of three,” and an adventurous nurse, Colton suffered serious injuries to her face and scalp. She remains hospitalized and is expected to undergo multiple surgeries. A GoFundMe campaign supporting her recovery has raised over $90,000 so far.
Her family emphasized how the attack could have happened to anyone doing something as ordinary as taking out the trash or collecting the mail. While expressing gratitude for the outpouring of support, they asked for privacy as Colton begins what they called a “long road to recovery,” and urged people to share her story with care.
Authorities believe a brown bear was behind the attack but have not yet located the animal. Wildlife officials and Alaska State Troopers continue to patrol the area, cautioning Kenai residents to remain vigilant. Bear encounters in the coastal city are not uncommon, especially during active seasons.
