Spanish police are investigating the suspected murders of dozens of migrants who were found dead after a small boat broke down while attempting to reach the Canary Islands. Survivors claim that over 70 people may have been thrown overboard during a deadly dispute at sea.
According to Spanish media outlet OkDiario, between 20 and 30 migrants currently housed in refugee centers are under investigation for allegedly killing fellow passengers. The reported motive was accusations of theft and witchcraft, as food and water supplies dwindled during the voyage.
The boat, which was drifting in the Atlantic Ocean for more than a week after suffering engine failure, was eventually rescued by the Spanish coastguard. Survivors said the vessel initially carried 320 people when it departed.
A spokesperson for Spain’s National Police confirmed that several individuals had been arrested in connection with the incident on Tuesday, September 2. These individuals are expected to provide statements to police and will be presented before the appropriate judicial authorities in the coming days.
This tragic incident highlights ongoing concerns about migrant safety and the dangers associated with irregular maritime crossings to Europe.
