A man and a woman were found dead Monday along Salado Creek in San Antonio, following a heavy rainstorm the night before, authorities said.
Police Chief William McManus told reporters that the pair appeared to have been swept away by rising creek waters during the storm. “It looked like they were washed up with the water last night,” he said, according to the Associated Press.
Both victims were believed to be homeless and were known to be friends, McManus added. The woman’s body was discovered along the edge of the creek bed and appeared to have drowned. As police continued to search downstream, they found the man’s body.
A third person initially reported missing was later found safe. Several water rescues took place Sunday night as thunderstorms moved through the area. Authorities also found signs of a disrupted homeless encampment scattered along the creek, according to local outlet KENS 5.
The investigation is ongoing, and officials say the exact circumstances of the deaths are still being determined.
