Mexican authorities have launched an investigation into the deaths of social media personality Esmeralda Ferrer Garibay, her husband, and their two young children, whose bodies were found wrapped in plastic and left inside their pickup truck in Guadalajara. Officials suspect the killings were a targeted attack linked to organized crime.

Esmeralda Ferrer Garibay, 32, a TikTok influencer and aspiring singer, was found dead alongside her husband, Roberto Carlos Gil Licea, 36, and their children—13-year-old Gael Santiago and 7-year-old Regina—on August 22. Their bodies were discovered inside an abandoned gray Ford Ranger, according to prosecutor Alfonso Gutiérrez Santillán.

Investigators tracked the vehicle’s movements through surveillance footage, which led them to a nearby auto repair shop. There, they uncovered bloodstains, spent bullet casings, and other ballistic evidence indicating that the family was likely killed at that location before their bodies were moved.

“While we are still awaiting final forensic results, the evidence strongly suggests the murders occurred at the auto shop,” Santillán said during a press conference.

Two men found at the repair shop were initially detained but were later released due to insufficient evidence, according to Diario de Yucatán.

In a disturbing development, the same two individuals were reportedly kidnapped by armed assailants shortly after being released. The attack occurred just minutes after they left the prosecutor’s office. The men were accompanied by two acquaintances when they were ambushed. Three of the four were taken, while one escaped and remains missing, according to Mexican media.

Prosecutor Blanca Trujillo stated the attackers had waited more than two hours before launching the assault, pointing to a carefully planned operation. Authorities have not confirmed whether the kidnapping was related to the murders of Garibay and her family.

Officials are now waiting to interview the individual who escaped in hopes of gaining more insight into the case.

The victims’ identities were formally confirmed on August 28. Local news outlet El Financiero reported that Gil Licea, the husband, is believed to have been the intended target of the attack.

Garibay had garnered over 44,000 followers on TikTok, where she frequently showcased a lifestyle of luxury brands, high-end cars, cosmetic procedures, and exotic vacations. She also posted videos of herself lip-syncing to narcocorridos—ballads that often romanticize drug cartels—while hinting at a connection between her husband and organized crime. One viral clip featured the caption “Advantages of having a narco boyfriend,” alongside a shot of a Gucci handbag. It received nearly 140,000 views.

However, investigators say there is currently no concrete evidence linking either Garibay or Gil Licea to cartel activities.

Instead, it’s believed that Gil Licea’s business ventures—selling vehicles and tomato farming in Michoacán, a region heavily affected by cartel violence—may have made him a target.

The family had recently relocated from Michoacán to Guadalajara in search of safer living conditions and better job prospects. The U.S. State Department currently lists Michoacán among the most dangerous areas in Mexico due to widespread cartel activity.

Authorities continue to investigate the case, which has shocked the nation and drawn widespread attention both online and in the media.
