WASHINGTON — Former President Donald Trump has ended Secret Service protection for former Vice President Kamala Harris, according to a senior adviser to Harris who spoke with NBC News on Friday.
“The Vice President is grateful to the United States Secret Service for their professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to safety,” the adviser said in a statement.
A senior White House official confirmed the move, noting that former vice presidents are typically entitled to Secret Service protection for six months after leaving office, in line with a 2008 law passed by Congress.
However, in January, President Joe Biden had signed an executive memorandum extending Harris’ protection to 18 months. A Secret Service official also confirmed that extension to NBC.
CNN was the first to report Trump’s decision.
Earlier this year, Trump also ended Secret Service protection for President Biden’s two adult children, Hunter and Ashley Biden.
Under federal law, former presidents and their spouses are entitled to lifetime Secret Service protection unless they decline it. Their children receive protection until they turn 16.
