Bryan Kohberger, who is serving four consecutive life sentences for the 2022 murders of four University of Idaho students, is reportedly facing harassment and threats from fellow inmates at the Idaho Maximum Security Institution, located just south of Boise.

Previously facing the possibility of the death penalty, Kohberger accepted a plea deal that removed capital punishment as an option. He is now serving life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Kohberger is being held in solitary confinement in the facility’s “J Block,” where he is permitted one hour of outdoor time per day. According to reports from the Daily Mail and NewsNation, other inmates have been shouting threats and vulgar comments at him through the prison’s ventilation system. He has allegedly become a frequent target of verbal abuse from other prisoners, who are said to be making his incarceration extremely difficult.

The 30-year-old was indicted by a secret grand jury in 2023 on four counts of first-degree murder and one count of burglary. He was convicted in connection with the fatal stabbings of Ethan Chapin, 20, of Conway, Washington; Madison Mogen, 21, of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; Xana Kernodle, 20, of Avondale, Arizona; and Kaylee Goncalves, 21, of Rathdrum, Idaho. The killings took place on November 13, 2022.

Kohberger has submitted written complaints to prison officials, alleging he is being sexually harassed and subjected to frequent verbal threats. In one form addressed to the warden, he requested to be moved to a different block, writing:

“Not engaging in any of the recent flooding/striking, as well as being subject to minute-by-minute verbal threats/harassment on that and other bases, tier 2 of J-block is an environment that I wish to transfer from if possible. I request transfer to B block immediately. I wish to speak with you soon.”

One inmate, known by the nickname “Peru,” allegedly made graphic threats, which were documented in an incident report obtained by journalist Brian Entin.

Kohberger, who identifies as a vegan, has also raised concerns about the food being served to him in prison, claiming it does not align with his dietary restrictions.

Authorities have not publicly responded to Kohberger’s complaints, and it remains unclear whether any action will be taken regarding his housing status within the prison.
