A Texas man convicted of assault and evading arrest was mistakenly released from jail just before he was scheduled to begin serving his prison sentence.

Troy Dugas, 36, had been held at the Harris County Jail since August 14 on unrelated charges that were later dismissed. Following the dismissal, he was released on August 17, according to KHOU.

However, Dugas had previously been sentenced to a total of seven years in prison for family violence assault and evading arrest in other counties. According to USA Today, that sentence was never properly recorded in his file at the Harris County Jail.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office is now asking the public to report any sightings of Dugas by calling 911.

“A thorough investigation will be conducted to determine the circumstances that led to Dugas’ erroneous release from jail,” the sheriff’s office said in a press release. “Preliminary indications are that jail staff did not properly document his state prison sentence in his file, leading to the mistaken assumption that Dugas was eligible for release once his Harris County charges were dismissed.”
