Community leaders in Cincinnati are expressing frustration over what they describe as a racial double standard following a violent altercation downtown last month. The incident, which was captured on video, led to the arrests of seven Black individuals, but some local leaders argue that a white man involved in the confrontation should also face charges.

The incident took place at the intersection of West Fourth Street and Elm Street in downtown Cincinnati. According to reports and video footage, a white man appeared to slap one of the individuals before a group assault ensued. The man was severely beaten and could not stand afterward. A white woman who was nearby was also struck during the incident, hitting her head on the pavement and reportedly losing consciousness.

To date, seven people have been arrested in connection with the attack. One of the suspects was reportedly out on bail for unrelated charges at the time.

In the video, a racial slur is audible, although it is unclear who said it. Community leaders argue that the slap and potential verbal provocation by the white man played a role in escalating the violence, and therefore, he should be held accountable as well.

At a community meeting held Monday at New Prospect Baptist Church in Roselawn, several local leaders shared their concerns.

“If the riot is because of a slap, who incited the riot?” asked Rev. Damon Lynch. “Why are the only people being charged the ones who look like me?”

Senior Pastor Tracie Hunter of Western Hills Brethren in Christ added, “Six individuals were charged with aggravated assault, which is a felony. The white guy encouraged six other people to commit a felony.”

Ohio State Rep. Cecil Thomas also weighed in: “The method by which this situation has been handled raises serious questions as to whether there’s bias involved in the investigation. It also brings into question a lack of integrity and whether there’s something else to hide.”

While acknowledging the severity of the assault, local leaders emphasized the importance of a thorough and equitable investigation. They argue that if the initial slap and potential use of a racial slur contributed to the escalation, those actions should also be considered in the legal process.

Law enforcement officials have not commented on whether additional charges will be filed as the investigation continues.
