Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY) told the Rev. Al Sharpton that her state is “bursting at the seams” with illegal immigrants.
With the expiration of Title 42 on Thursday at 11:59 p.m., border officials expected to face an unprecedented surge of migrants crossing from Mexico into the United States.
However, a single massive storming did not occur, and the Biden administration has maintained there has been a sharp decline in the number of known illegal border crossings since it rescinded the pandemic-era protocol.

“We already have over 61,000 — over 40,000 housed in New York City,” she said. “They’re bursting at the seams, and Mayor [Eric] Adams is doing the very best he can in a difficult situation.”
At least $1 billion of the state budget and legal assistance has been put forward by Hochul’s administration to address the situation, she said.
“Now, we’re in the position of trying to help find places for these individuals,” she said. “I asked the federal government to give emergency funding. I’m asking for federal installations, like military installations, to help out.”
People will start living in tents — not just on the border but in the streets of New York City and across the state, Hochul said.
“We’ve reached a breaking point,” she concluded.
