Former Rep. Will Hurd, R-Texas, described a 2024 general election matchup between President Joe Biden and Former President Donald Trump as a “rematch from hell.”
“The reality is two-thirds of Americans want somebody other than Donald Trump and Joe Biden,” Hurd said Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “That’s like the rematch from hell.”
Polling has indicated the majority of Americans don’t want to see Biden or Trump on the campaign trail again. An Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll released in April found only 26% of Americans think Biden should run for a second term, and 30% of Americans think Trump should run again. The poll had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.9%.
A NBC News poll released in April yielded similar results. Twenty-six percent of respondents thought Biden should run for another term and 35% thought Trump should run for reelection. The poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1%.
“Nobody wants (Trump or Biden) as their choice,” Hurd said.
Hurd said the onus was on voters to produce more popular candidates, pointing to low voter turnout in primary elections. If there was higher turnout, “we’ll see better choices in November, choices that we would actually like and be excited to vote for,” Hurd said.
Hurd is considering a presidential bid of his own in the Republican primary. As to when that decision will come, Hurd said he will share his thoughts “before Memorial day.”
