Brittney Griner recently played her first game for the Phoenix Mercury since her return from detainment in Russia. The seven-time All-Star scored 10 points against the Los Angeles Sparks in her first game in 572 days.
Prior to her detainment, Griner spoke out about the national anthem during the George Floyd protests of 2020. She said she wouldn’t stand for the anthem and even advocated for removing it from pregame ceremonies.
On Friday, Griner stood for the anthem with her teammates in her first game back, and she seems to have a new perspective.
“Hearing the national anthem, it definitely hit different,” said Griner, who has two Olympic gold medals with the USA women’s basketball team.
“It’s like when you go for the Olympics, you’re sitting there, about to get gold put on your neck, the flags are going up, and the anthem is playing, it just hits different.”
The sports world reacted to Griner’s apparent change of heart.
“Freedom will do that to you,” one fan said.
