The wife of Francisco Oropesa, the man accused of murdering five people in a San Jacinto County home on Friday, has also been arrested for allegedly helping her husband to elude capture during a four-day manhunt that involved multiple law enforcement agencies.
Divimara Lamar Nava, 52, has been charged with hindering apprehension and prosecution of a known felon in connection with the search for Francisco Oropesa, 38, per a report by Matt deGrood of the Houston Chronicle. Nava was reportedly with Oropesa when he was arrested “without incident” at his sister’s home in the town of Cut and Shoot in Montgomery County on Tuesday following a tip about his whereabouts.
Following his arrest, Oropesa was taken to a detention facility in Coldsprings, per deGrood. Nava, who is being held without bond, was booked at the Montgomery County Jail and is set to make a court appearance on Wednesday. Authorities are investigating whether Oropesa’s relatives were hiding him in the days since the shooting.
Oropesa faces at least five murder charges in connection with the shooting deaths of five people inside a home adjacent to his property near Cleveland, Texas. Sonia Guzmán, 28, Diana Velásquez, 21, Obdulia Molina, 31, Jonathan Cáceres, 18, and nine-year-old Daniel Enrique Lazo were found slain when Oropesa allegedly stormed into the home and began shooting its occupants after he was asked to not fire his rifle on his property Friday night.
Four of the victims were announced dead on the scene and one more was later pronounced dead after being rushed to the hospital. San Jacinto County Sheriff Greg Capers previously told media that Oropesa was likely intoxicated at the time of the shooting and fled to a wooded area a few miles away from the scene. While there were 10 people in the house at the time of the shooting, no one else was injured, Capers said.
