Lawyer compares Trump to Jesus Christ ahead of expected indictment

A lawyer known for defending participants in the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riots compared former President Donald Trump to Jesus Christ in light of his alleged arrest next week.

Trump claimed on his Truth Social platform Saturday morning that he expects to be arrested Tuesday in connection with Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s investigation. Bragg’s office has investigated the former president’s alleged involvement in a scheme to pay “hush money” to adult film star Stormy Daniels in 2016.

Joseph D. McBride, a conservative attorney known for defending several Jan. 6 indictments, responded to Trump’s claim of an impending arrest on Twitter on Saturday. He compared Trump’s situation to the death and resurrection of Jesus. He also urged Trump supporters to peacefully protest the possible arrest and vote for his re-election in 2024.

“President Trump will be arrested during Lent – a time of suffering and cleansing for followers of Jesus Christ,” McBride wrote on Twitter. “As Christ was crucified and rose again on the third day, so it will be [Donald Trump]. Violence is never the answer. election victory. Vote for Trump!”

In another tweet, he added: “JESUS LOVES DONALD TRUMP. JESUS DIED FOR DONALD TRUMP. JESUS LIVES IN DONALD TRUMP.

McBride’s tweet was mocked by some other Twitter users, including Trump critics like Adam Kinzinger, the former GOP representative who served on the House selection committee investigating Jan. 6.

“Not a cult,” Kinzinger sarcastically tweeted in response to McBride.

Trump’s communications team downplayed and recounted his claim about a possible arrest next week news week commenting on a previous story that he had received no official notification of the matter, attributing the knowledge to “illegal leaks” from the Justice Department and the Bragg office. They also claimed that Trump will appear at a rally in Texas next week.

McBride has previously made similar comparisons to Jesus when speaking about the treatment of his clients and others arrested for taking part in the Jan. 6 Capitol riots.

“Jan-Sixers are being fed to the Lions for sports in DC and the FBI is targeting practicing Catholics and labeling us extremists,” McBride tweeted in February. “Evil has never been bolder and good people have never been more afraid to stand up. We still have to get up. Never forget that Jesus was killed because he was an ‘extremist’.”
