Billionaire Warren Buffett still lives in same Omaha house he purchased for $31.5K more than 60 years ago
OMAHA, NEBRASKA: Warren Buffett, known for his canny moves as a successful businessman, is pretty frugal despite his billions. The 92-year-old has actually lived in the same modest house for 65 years. The CEO of Berkshire Hathaway currently resides in a five-bedroom home in central Omaha, Nebraska. His initial purchase cost him $31,500 in 1958, or around $329,505 in today’s currency.
Buffett and Becky Quick have a long-standing friendship, and she routinely interviews him on CNBC and says, “He’s authentic.” She adds, “Warren Buffett’s authenticity really runs through because he lives what he says.”
In a 2010 letter to his shareholders, Buffett ranked his home as the third-best investment he had ever made, praising the advantages of homeownership, as reported by CNBC. Located in Omaha on a corner lot, the 6,570-square-foot home is only a five-minute drive from Berkshire Hathaway’s corporate offices. The original stucco building from 1921 seems to have seen some upgrades as well. According to Zillow, it is currently valued at around $1.2 million.
‘I couldn’t imagine having a better house’
Buffett has yet to make plans to exchange his modest Omaha house for a more opulent one. He said, “I’m happy there. I’d move if I thought I’d be happier someplace else,” He adds. “I’m warm in the winter, I’m cool in the summer, it’s convenient for me,” he said in the interview. “I couldn’t imagine having a better house.”
Buffett still eats at McDonald’s
Buffett isn’t a huge spender, despite having a net worth of nearly $106 billion, according to Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index. In 2020, he finally upgraded from his $20 flip phone to an iPhone 11, despite the fact that Apple is Berkshire Hathaway’s third-largest business after railways and insurance. He also never pays more than $4 for breakfast. Buffett routinely gets the same meal from McDonald’s on his five-minute journey to work and selects one of three options: two sausage patties for $2.61; a sausage, egg, and cheese for $2.95; or a bacon, egg, and cheese for $3.17, as per reports.
In the HBO documentary ‘Becoming Warren Buffett,’ which was released in 2017, he discussed how the stock market influences the items he orders for breakfast. He says in the documentary, “$3.17 is a bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit, but the market’s down this morning, so I’ll pass up the $3.17 and go with the $2.95.”
