Following various Jan. 18 reports that New Orleans mayor LaToya Cantrell was the initialed, named “Mrs. L.C.” in a divorce filing by the wife of a local police officer, she fired back.
“By the time I complete my tenure as mayor I would have slept with half of the city of New Orleans based on false accusations that come my way sometimes daily,” Cantrell said in a text message to the Times-Picayune. “This is only one of them.”
“If I were a MAN you would NOT be texting me about this bullsh*t.”

WVUE-TV and WDSU-TV made the affair claim, which was quickly picked up by other local outlets. According to the latter’s Lee Zurik, the wife of NOPD officer Jeffrey Vappie filed an amended divorce petition this month. The mayor is married to Jeffrey Cantrell.

Danielle Dionne Watkins Vappie states that she became aware of the affair in November. She accuses her husband and the mayor of engaging in an illicit sexual relationship since May 2021, when officer Vappie joined her executive protection team.
She adds that her husband confirmed the affair to her. At the beginning of January, the same WVUE-TV reporter, Zurik, shared a report about how Cantrell was spending inordinate amounts of time in a city apartment with Vappie.

The president of the Metropolitan Crime Commission told WVUE that if proven, this behavior could have serious consequences for both Jeffrey Vappie and the mayor. In the police officer’s case, personal behavior occurring during paid work hours could tag him for payroll fraud and more.
