Brooklyn, NY – The police union shared a video of a New York Police Department (NYPD) officer being choked by a suspect on the floor at a Target store on Tuesday while bystanders stood by and filmed the attack instead of trying to help (video below).
NYPD said the incident occurred at about 2 p.m. on Nov. 23 inside the Target at the Atlantic Terminal Mall, the Daily Mail reported.
The officer saw 44-year-old Henroy Johnson acting “disorderly and flipping items on shelves onto the ground.”
NYPD said that Johnson “began menacing the officer with a metal bottle,” the Daily Mail reported.
Police said the suspect made “verbal threats and became physically aggressive” toward the officer.
Then Johnson attacked the officer and both men went to the ground wrestling, the Daily Mail reported.
The officer and Johnson were rolling around on the floor engaged in hand-to-hand combat when a witness began filming.
The video showed that bystanders who witnessed the attack on the officer did nothing to intervene or help him.
Less than 10 seconds into the video, a Target employee stepped close to the fight and pulled a countertop away from the fray but did nothing to assist the officer.
The video showed Johnson on top of the officer with his hands on the officer’s face and neck.
In the video, passersby continued walking by just feet away from the melee on the Target floor and customers stood around clutching packages in their hands as they watched the fight.
Then the video showed that Johnson let go of the officer and tried to get to his feet to leave.
The officer jumped up and grabbed Johnson by his hoodie and tried to detain him.
Johnson proceeded to pick up items he had dropped on the floor and tried to leave the area, the video showed.
He reached into his sweatshirt pocket a couple of time just as the officer pulled out handcuffs and tried to detain him.
That was when Johnson dropped the items he was carrying to the floor and bent and picked up the officer around the legs and threw him to the floor, the video showed.
Johnson crashed to the ground on top of the officer and the fight continued as the video ended.
No one tried to intervene or assist the officer at any point during the attack, the Daily Mail reported.
NYPD Police Benevolent Association President Pat Lynch posted the video of the assault on the officer to social media on Wednesday and called out the witnesses who did nothing.
“DISTURBING VIDEO,” Lynch tweeted. “We have a police officer in distress, & nobody helps him. Is this the city we want? Has this become normal? It has to stop.”
“We need your help,” the union boss continued. “We need your help on the street, & we need your help to force our reckless elec. officials to do their job.”
NYPD said that Johnson was ultimately arrested and charged with assault of a police officer, resisting arrest, menacing, disorderly conduct, and obstruction, the Daily Mail reported.
The police department said the officer was working a paid detail at the Target store when he was attacked.
NYPD said the officer was treated at the scene for bruises and scratches to his head, eyes, and cheek, according to the Daily Mail.
