Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler pepper-sprays man who accosted him outside pub

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler pepper-sprayed a man who accosted him after he dined at a local pub on Sunday night, according to reports.

Wheeler was with former Portland Mayor Sam Adams when a man confronted them outside McMenamins Hillsdale Brewery & Public House, according to a police report obtained by The Oregonian.

The man reportedly complained that Wheeler and Adams were not wearing face masks while dining.

The two had been inside the restaurant’s tent, and Wheeler explained to the man that masks are not required while eating, KOIN reported.

Recording with his cellphone, the man, who was maskless, then followed Wheeler to his car.

“I became imminently concerned for my personal safety,” Wheeler later told authorities, as detailed in the police report.

Wheeler told the man to back off, but he refused.

“I informed him that I was carrying pepper spray and that I would use it if he did not back off. He remained at close distance, I pulled out my pepper spray and I sprayed him in the eyes,” the mayor said in the report.

In a statement to The Oregonian, Wheeler’s spokesman, Tim Becker, acknowledged the incident.

“The mayor is cooperating with the police investigation and encourages others involved to do the same,” Becker said.

Sunday night was the second time this month that Wheeler was confronted while dining.

He was punched in the face as he dined at Café Nell’s on Jan. 6.
