PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WJAR) — A scene straight out of a parent’s nightmare was caught on camera.

WJAR obtained surveillance video of the moments leading up to a kidnapping in Providence.

The video shows a gray SUV driving near Merino and Grover streets, where a 9-year-old girl was walking home at about 3 p.m. Monday.

The vehicle turns down the street and parks, and then someone gets out and grabs the child.

Later on Tuesday, the Providence Police Department released a video with a better angle of the abduction.

“He grabbed her. Put his hand around her mouth,” said Mayra Lopez. “You see the little girl try to get away from him. He threw her in the car, went straight down.”

Lopez on Tuesday recounted the kidnapping captured by her cameras.

“Oh, my God. It’s scary. The first time I’ve seen something like that,” Lopez said.

The girl was kidnapped shortly after getting off a school bus. Police said she was later dropped off not too far from where she was taken.

Shortly afterwards, officers knocked on Lopez’s door.

“They came over here asking who got cameras, and I said, ‘I got cameras,'” Lopez said.

Police used surveillance cameras like hers to grab shots of the kidnapper’s gray or silver Nissan SUV. The alleged kidnapper was arrested on Tuesday.

“Oh, my God. I’ve got granddaughters. I got granddaughters. — or anybody’s kid,” Lopez said. “If I knew that? Oh, my God.”
