Shots Fired Into Home of Police Couple With Newborn in Camden, New Jersey

Two people opened fire into the home of two New Jersey police officers who have a newborn child, and a manhunt continues in search of the shooters. In a press conference, Camden County Police Chief Joseph Wysocki discussed details from the shooting. He indicated that one of the officers had worked for the police department for four-and-a-half years, and the other had been with the force for two-and-a half years.

“We have two young officers. They were born in the city, raised in the city, and are members of the Camden County Police Department,” he said in the press conference. “Ten days before this incident, they had their first baby together [and] started a family.”

Wysocki said that both officers and their child were fortunately unharmed. “Their home on the night of September 15 at 11:46 p.m. We had a shot splatter accusation for ten rounds of gunfire. Camden County Police responded to this residence, and it was struck multiple times. We located seven spent shellcases on the scene, and the house was struck six times, with the bullets penetrating the interior of the house,” he said.

Wysocki said that the department located a Honda Odyssey believed to be involved with the two shooters, and asked for people who may have information related to the shooters to come forward.

USA Today reported that Wysocki said that the department was looking into both officers’ pasts to determine if they were targeted. “We’re looking into every arrest that they have had. We’re not going to leave a rock unturned,” he said.

Camden County Freeholder Director Louis Cappelli said that punishment for the suspects will be severe. “I want to send a very clear message to the scumbag thugs behind this senseless act,” he said, according to USA Today. “We are coming to get you and you’ll be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

According to the Courier Post, rewards of over $50,000 are being offered in connection to the arrest and conviction of the shooters.

Other people offered support for Camden County Police to bring the shooters to justice. The New York City PBA and New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy both showed support for the officers.

“Our profession is under attack in the state legislature and in the streets — and now police officers and our families under attack AT OUR HOMES. We stand in solidarity with our colleagues @CamdenCountyPD after this outrageous assault on their own,” the PBA wrote in a tweet.
