Bob Bashara, convicted in wife’s murder-for-hire, dies at 62

Bob Bashara, a Grosse Pointe Park businessman who was sentenced to life in prison after paying a handyman to kill his wife, has died.

Michigan Department of Corrections spokesman Chris Gautz confirmed that Bashara, 62,  died on Monday. He had been hospitalized since July 26, Gautz said.

Bashara’s cause of death is unclear. Gautz said there were no COVID-19-positive tests at Woodland Center Correctional Facility in Whitmore Lake, where he was being held.

In December 2014, Bashara was convicted on five counts, including first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Bashara’s handyman, Joseph Gentz, testified that he killed Jane Bashara at her husband’s request by strangling her.

It was one of the most sordid murder cases in recent history in metro Detroit, involving BDSM — bondage, discipline, sadism and masochism — along with sex dungeons and sex slaves.

Jane Bashara, 56, a marketing executive, was found strangled in her Mercedes-Benz SUV, which had been dumped in an alley on Detroit’s east side in 2012.

Prosecutors said Bashara masterminded her killing.

The high-profile trial spanned several weeks and included testimony from more than 70 witnesses, including Bashara’s former mistress, his two children, other family members and former tenants of his rental properties.

Bashara was convicted in 2014 of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, solicitation of murder, obstruction of justice and witness intimidation.

During his sentencing, he denied any responsibility.

Prosecutors have said Bashara, who was known in BDSM community as “Master Bob,” planned a new life with his longtime mistress.

Gentz said Bashara offered him money to kill his wife and threatened him if he didn’t go through with it. Gentz accepted a plea deal and is serving a sentence of 17-28 years in prison for second-degree murder.
