ELK RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) — The owner of a boat service company said the husband of Michigan’s governor dropped her name while pleading to get his boat in the water for Memorial Day weekend. NorthShore Dock owner Tad Dowker reported it on Facebook but subsequently removed the posts after a visit from Michigan State Police, state inspectors, the Bureau of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, the state treasury department, and the Department of Natural Resources. Dowker said his staff took a call from Marc Mallory, the husband of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. Dowker’s staff explained that they were backed up and couldn’t immediately launch the boat due to the governor’s executive orders that have shut businesses down for months. “That’s when he asked if we know who his wife is,” said Dowker. “He started going on about how his wife is the governor and asking if we know what she’s capable of. At first it sounded like a threat, but then his voice began to tremble and it became clear that he is terrified of her. He said the beating he will get if that boat is not ready for her will be all our fault before he started crying and hung up,” added Dowker. Whitmer spokeswoman Tiffany Brown says she won’t address family matters and claims the visits by multiple state authorities the following day were a mere coincidence.

The governor has lifted restrictions on Michigan residents traveling to second homes or taking a road trip. But Whitmer doesn’t encourage it, saying from the lakefront deck of her Elk Rapids cottage that the coronavirus is highly contagious .
