Allegan community concerned about a cat killer after mutilated bodies found
ALLEGAN, Mich — People in Allegan have reported on social media that several cats have been found mutilated throughout town and are worried about a cat killer.
Melissa Gilbert, manager of the Shell gas station in Allegan, said on Friday Jan. 10, 2020, just before the doors of the gas station were opened that a frequent customer asked if he could go through dumpster to collect cans and bottles, but he ended up finding more than he bargained.
“He ended up finding a cat in one of the bags,” Gilbert said.
She said the cat was mutilated.
She said neither her or the employees wanted to touch it because they did not know what to do and a nearby officer conducting a traffic stop in the gas station parking lot told her it was their responsibility to dispose of the cat.
“There is not any cameras outside to make a visual who had done this. There wasn’t anything they can do to help us,” Gilbert said.
People took to the Allegan Informed Facebook page, suggesting it was not the only incident of a mutilated cat in town.
Allegan police said they have had no reports of an incident, but Gilbert said they didn’t have a report because the officer did not take a report.
“I think it’s because we don’t have any way to figure out who in fact done it, and maybe it’s not that much that they can do,” Gilbert said.
Gilbert said she is as an animal lover and the mutilation is not acceptable.
She said if there is someone going around killing cats they need to stop.
“I find it absurd that someone would do that to an animal. It’s just not right,” Gilbert said.
Allegan County Animal Control have not responded after numerous calls.
Killing or torturing an animal is a felony charge and convicted offender could face up to 10 years in prison, a $5,000 fine and up to 500 hours of community service.
