Party Honoring Man Who Was Shot Erupts in Gunfire. 13 are wounded, 4 critically in Chicago shooting

A house party honoring a man who was killed erupted in gunfire early Sunday morning, injuring 13—four of them critically, the Chicago Tribune reports. Details are scant, but Chicago detectives are questioning two suspects and analyzing city police video of people pouring from the house amid further shooting. Seems two shooters fired outside, one at a passing vehicle. “It’s a chaotic scene,” Chicago Police Chief of Patrol Fred Waller tells the Chicago Sun-Times. “Listening to the radio, you can hear people who didn’t even know that they were shot were responding as they went home.” One suspect was himself shot, while the other was stopped with a revolver on him.

The wounded suspect is “possibly the initiator, or possibly someone who was firing a weapon,” Waller tells CBS Chicago. The party was held for 22-year-old Lonell Irvin, who was killed in April during an attempted carjacking; the shooter, who had a license to carry and owned a 2015 BMW, was considered the victim. But police say the Sunday shooting appears unconnected: “Right now, it doesn’t appear to have been a targeted or retaliation-type incident,” says a Chicago police rep. “It appears to be more of a personal dispute inside the party that spilled out into the street.” This was the fourth shooting attack since 2014 on the 5700 block of South May Street. Nice ‘hood.
