Barry Tyson, Lamont Gholston, and Blake Joshua Isiah McKinney have been arrested on multiple charges.
Bryans Road, MD – An off-duty federal police officer who unwittingly walked into an armed robbery at a CVS store last week immediately jumped into action and confronted the three armed assailants, according to police.
The incident occurred at the CVS store on Indian Head Highway at approximately 4:41 p.m. on Dec. 6, the Charles County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) said in a press release on Saturday.
According to investigators, three suspects barged into the store and demanded that employees hand over cash and prescription medications.
At least one of the robbers was armed with a handgun.
As the robbery was going down inside the store, an off-duty federal police officer happened to walk into the business.
One of the employees told him what was happening, at which point the officer “took immediate action,” the CCSO said.
Two of the suspects took off on foot and jumped into a vehicle parked outside.
“As the officer tried to make the arrest, the driver reached for an object at which time, fearing for his life, the officer discharged his firearm,” according to the CCSO.
The round did not hit any of the suspects, and the driver subsequently sped away from the scene.
Meanwhile, the second suspect ran back into the CVS store.
Additional officers responded to the scene and placed two of the suspects under arrest.
The suspect who fled after the officer-involved shooting was apprehended near Bensville Road after he crashed his getaway vehicle into a telephone pole and tried to take off on foot.
Investigators later determined that the vehicle had been reported as stolen during a carjacking in a nearby county earlier that day.
Police located ski masks, gloves, and extended ammunition magazine and a loaded semi-automatic handgun inside the stolen vehicle.
The armed attackers have been identified as 18-year-old Alonzo Gholston, 18-year-old Blake Joshua Isiah McKinney, and 17-year-old Barry Tyson.
All three have been charged with multiple offenses, including second-degree assault, first-degree assault, and armed robbery, according to the CCSO.
Tyson was charged as an adult.
